Google Brings in the PowerMeter
The electric industry has been slowly but surely replacing older analog electric meters and are replacing them with more efficient and accurate smart-meters that have micro controllers and are capable of sending statistical data to the electric company and now to you, through Google’s PowerMeter which communicates with your electric meter through the power meter allowing you to track your electrical consumption. The program takes the form of a widget that allows your computer to communicate with newer electric meters that are now at an astounding 40 million units with an expected 100 million to be installed within the next couple of years.
Smart-electric meters have built-in micro controllers allowing the power company to read them easily through lasers or radio transmitters allowing them to cut costs in meter-reading facilities. These meters are so modern they can do data-logging, storing power use and trends making them available to the power company and soon to you through the internet from Google. Still in the beta-testing phase, environment conscious Google is producing more and more apps that aim to help the environment and people to reduce their carbon footprint as they go on living in this recession wrecked world.
